COVID-19 Herbs: Various computational molecular docking studies have shown that phytochemicals present in green tea or Camellia sinensis has the potential to inhibit the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus.

There are a variety of phytochemicals present in the leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant and some of them like Catechins, Theaflavins and Myricetins have demonstrated their efficacy as antivirals against the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus in vitro studies involving Vero E6 cells.

In particular the identified phytochemicals that have shown to have efficacy by the inhibition of SARS-CoV 3C-like Protease activity as demonstrated by both molecular docking studies and also by vitro studies involving Vero E6 cells are Myricetin 3-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside, Theaflavin-3,3′-digallate (TF3) and Epigallocatechin Gallate.

Before anyone assumes that merely drinking cups of green tea is going to treat COVID-19, we have to warn you that this is not the case as the phytochemicals need to be extracted out properly and the green tea needs to be pre-treated in a proper manner to get the right phytochemicals seeping out when brewed etc. Also, the right quantities of these phytochemicals are needed to demonstrate any efficacy. It should also be noted that no vivo studies and human trials have been done yet to treat COVID-19 using these phytochemicals from green tea.

The Indian UPASI Tea Research Institute at Coonoor in Nilgiris district of Tamil Nadu in conjunction with the Indian regulatory bodies are only now starting the investigationa studies of the anti-viral property of Theaflavins-3, a compound abundantly found in green tea and catechins from green tea for control of Coronavirus. The study is being undertaken in collaboration with Tea Board of India through ICMR. and involves both vivo models and human trials.
/> Researchers from Taiwan and China have found that in a laboratory study SARS Cov-2 could be inhibited by compounds that are abundant in teas. Past studies from China had also shown the compounds from green  tea could inhibit the other kinds of coronaviruses by disrupting its replication processes. https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0034528815300588

Green tea has been well studied for its polyphenol benefits because the tea leaves are unoxidized, which is why they retain their green color.

Numerous other studies have also shown that phytochemicals from green tea can inhibit chymotrypsin-like protease activity and that the key molecule that is responsible for such activity is Theaflavin-3,3′ -digallate (TF3). https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1142193/

Past studies have reported that theaflavins extracted from green tea were able to completely neutralize bovine coronavirus and rotavirus infections. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/9850995/

Thailand Medical News had already mention about possible merits of green tea for COVID-19 in an article in May. https://www.thailandmedical.news/news/covid-19-therapeutics-computational-screenings-show-a-variety-of-natural-phytochemicals-could-have-efficacy-against-sars-cov-2-including-egcg-from-gre

There are also other phytochemicals present in green tea that can help with the COVID-19 disease including methylxanthines, theophylline and dyphylline. The later two are known to help in treat respiratory illnesses such as asthma and chronic bronchitis .

But in all cases it must be again warned that these phytochemicals are needed in the right amounts and right forms, merely drinking  cups of normal green tea might not truly help at all.

Also, it must be noted that numerous Western media, Western fact checkers and Western researchers especially from America and Europe like to consider all herbs based therapies or cures as fake news or misinformation and many of the American social media platforms including Facebook like to consider any articles related to herbs and supplements as fake news and misinformation based on directives from the incompetent individuals from the WHO (World Health Organization.) and also the US CDC, US FDA  who are all being manipulated by the pharma giants. However it is unfortunate that it is most of these Western countries that are the ones recording the higher death tolls and infection rates. Most Westerners like to believe their Western governments and media and assume that that they Westerners know better. Except for a few smart and educated Americans and Europeans who follow news sites like ours, the rest are simply ignorant and would put more faith into expensive toxic drugs that are peddled to them by their governments, Western media and social media platforms.

Thailand Medical News has also specially created a therapeutic tea blend that is a blend of herbs all with supporting medical and scientific studies that have been pre-treated to enhance the composition of phytochemicals in them . We do not make any claims about this tea but rather let readers do their due diligence based on supporting studies. https://www.thailandmedical.news/news/new-therapeutic-teas-

Green tea or camellia sinensis is one of the components of the tea alongside honey suckle, licorice, kumquats and a host of other herbs. For those interested, note that it is better to procur them before another round of shutdowns come into place again around year end when the expected real second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic is expected to strike and transportation of such items might be difficult then.
