Outbreak News: International Experts, epidemiologists and scientist need to keep a close watch on the current developments taking place in Peru as reports show that there is a major health crisis brewing in the country with a population of 33.7 million people but with a very primitive public health infrastructure.
Monkeypox Crisis
Reports have already emerged that monkeypox or Mpox infections are rising across the country with Peru’s Ministry of Health announcing yesterday that cases have indeed risen but local physicians are contradicting the actual figures released by the government authorities and saying that the caseloads are much higher.

The WHO reported that 8 deaths from Mpox for the 2023 have been reported in just Peru alone but again local physicians are disputing the figure and saying that the actual figure could be between 6 to 8 fold and often there is no proper laboratory diagnostic procedures done to confirm mPox infections or deaths due to lack of resources across many hospitals in the country.

Dengue Outbreak
Peru is also going through a dengue outbreak since the start of the year and in neighboring Bolivia, the dengue crisis is also fast escalating.

H5N1 Avian Flu Hitting Bird, Poultry Farms And Mammals Hard In Peru
In the last three months, lots of H5N1 Avian Flu
Outbreak News coverages have covered stories about how bad the virus has wreaked havoc on the poultry farms in Peru and also the bird populations and worse how various mammals have already been infected and killed by the virus.

It is believed that human infections and human-to-human transmissions have already started occurring in Peru but due to lack of proper labs and diagnostics, along with attempts by certain agencies to conceal data, no one is really getting the real truth about what is really brewing there.
Measles Alert
Although the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) issued a measles alert for the Americas about measles, there has already been an outbreak of measles in various parts of Peru including Lima although no media coverages have appeared so far!

Misc Health Crisis ie HIV, HPV, etc
While Peru is going through a political crisis, local physicians are worried that numerous other diseases including HIV, HPV etc are spiraling out of control with many unable to get proper access to treatments and also treatments. Cancer rates are also increasing …all these points out to a fairly large immunocompromised group of individuals in the country…the perfect breeding medium for viruses to evolve! Malnutrition is also a problem as masses have no supply to proper food stocks!

COVID-19 Situation
There have been literally no public COVID-19 testing facilities by the government for the last 3 months although private hospitals and clinics do offer them to patients who are sick but at a very high cost and also there has been literally no genomic sequencing done for the last 5 months in the country although reported caseloads are around 300 to 150 per week in 2023. (Actual amounts could be much higher!)
A Potential ‘Time Bomb’
Considering just the few issues that we have highlighted, the situation in Peru is very volatile and in reality…..due to lack of resources, proper testing and laboratory diagnostics, no one really has a proper perspective of what is really brewing in Peru at the moment especially with regards to Mpox, H5N1 Avian Flu and SARS-CoV-2! Peru could become the epicenter for the emergence of some worrisome new virus strains and disease outbreak that could spread to the rest of South America considering its porous and busy borders.
