COVID-19 News: In the wake of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the State Department of Health of Mato Grosso (SES-MT) in Brazil is grappling with a significant surge in confirmed cases, raising concerns among health authorities.

New JN.2.5 Variant Wreaking Havoc In Mato Grosso-Brazil

Mato Grosso is a state located in the Central-West region of Brazil and is the third largest state by area.

As of January 25, the state has reported a staggering 2,605 confirmed COVID-19 cases and six fatalities within a few weeks, marking a disturbing trend in the region.

The Brazil government’s latest COVID-19 update reveals a challenging situation in just Mato Grosso alone, with 253 individuals currently hospitalized, 18 in adult ICUs, and a concerning 90% occupancy rate in adult ICUs. The updates further highlight the grim reality of the pandemic, with 350 new cases reported in the last 24 hours alone, and 270 cases currently under monitoring, bringing the total to 1,391.

Thailand Medical News had warned about of a new BA.2.86 variant, ie JN.2.5 which is possibly even more transmissible and pathogenic than JN.1 being identified in Mato Grosso a week ago after it was silently wreaking havoc in Canada. (Note that Canadian media was censoring all news about the rise in COVID-19 hospitalizations, ER departments being overwhelmed and even about rising COVID-19 deaths and excess death rates as per directives from the WEF!)

Notably, Mato Grosso is witnessing a spike in the spread of COVID-19, with the adult ICU occupancy rate reaching an alarming 90%. This surge in cases is placing immense pressure on the healthcare system, raising concerns about the state's ability to handle the escalating crisis.

Beside the rising COVID-19 case numbers, Mato Grosso faces the unknown threats form the emergence of a new subvariant of COVID-19 known as JN 2.5. This subvariant, identified as a variation of the BA.2.86 strain.

From what is being reported so far, it seems that the new JN.2.5 variant is driving COVID-19 hospitalizations and possibly disease severity however there has been no research conducted so far to assess this.

Various local COVID-19 News updates are indicating a worrisome COVID-19 situation unfolding in Mato Grosso.

The COVID-19 risk rating in Mato Grosso indicates a precarious situation, with three municipalities - União do Sul, Porto dos Gaúchos, and Paranaíta -  classified as VERY HIGH risk due to their high incidence rates. Additionally, 12 municipalities, including Matupá, São Félix do Araguaia, and Lucas do Rio Verde, are categorized as HIGH RISK, signaling the need for heightened vigilance in these areas. Another 43 municipalities are at MODERATE RISK, further emphasizing the widespread impact of the virus across the state.

A concerning aspect of the situation is the rapid increase in positive cases compared to the previous month. Until last Tuesday, positive cases surged by 70.73%, posing a significant challenge for health authorities. In the first week of January alone, 1,977 people were diagnosed with COVID-19, resulting in four deaths and 38 hospitalizations. The regions with the highest case numbers include Tele Pires, Baixada Cuiabana, Vale do Peixoto, and Oeste Mato-Grossense.

In conclusion, Mato Grosso is currently facing a critical juncture in its battle against COVID-19, with rising cases, strained healthcare facilities, and the emergence of the JN 2.5 subvariant. Heightened awareness, stringent preventive measures, and swift response strategies are imperative to mitigate the impact of the virus and safeguard public health in the region.
