COVID-19 News: The next few coming weeks and months will see a new phase in the COVID-19 pandemic in which there is be not one or a few major variants playing a role in the surges or waves or wavelets or whatever else the clowns want to name them but rather the ongoing crisis will be led by hundreds of different BA.2.86 and JN.1 spawns or sub-lineages and even recombinant sub-lineages.

Unknow to many, the BA.2.86 and JN.1 variants are evolving and spawning sub-lineages with unique mutations at an unprecedented rate never before seen in the history or annals of virology.

As can be seen on GISAID, there are over 3000 different spawns of just the JN.1 at the moment and the amounts are growing day by day. Some may be only one sequence while others have the right viral fitness and are slowly increasing in numbers. In the case of the BA.2.86 variant, there are over 400 different spawns so far!
In fact, we at Thailand
Medical News, are finding it hard keeping track of so many newer JN.1 sub-lineages and BA.2.86 sub-lineages.
Whatever data that some variant hunters in Europe and America are publishing online are not the least accurate anymore as genomic surveillance in many countries have either been reduced or stopped and about less than 37 countries are submitting sequences to GISAID on a regular basis. In fact these days, most of these variant hunters do not seem to be focussed on the great works that they were once doing as they are more focussed on trying to get more interviews or coverages in the garbage news platform: Fortune Well! (Not sure if they are trying to score with a certain journalist from there!)... or trying to seek more fame on the X platform!
Also, in the data seen on certain platforms, some “experts” are simply lumping up sequences of JN.1 spawns that do not seen to be in high numbers as simply JN.1!
Before, continuing, lets revert back to the yet another new development. Local
COVID-19 News coverages in Brazil are raising concerns about the detection of a new BA.2.86 spawn on its soil called BA.2.5.

With very little news coverage or even mentions online, many are unaware that the JN.2.5 was actually one of few BA.2.86 sub-lineages that was driving disease severity and hospitalizations and even increased risk of mortality in parts of Canada.
The JN.2.5 was identified in Canada in Mid-December 2023 and is a spawn of JN.2 (BA.2.86.1+S:L455S+A2127G+C4921T,).

It spots the additional mutations C4921T+T22926C(S:L455S).
While not a predominant variant, its number have grown gradually in Canada where most cases of hospitalizations (about 156sequnces) and deaths were probably caused by it as almost all its sequences uploaded onto GISAID were from severely hospitalized patients.
Beside six countries where this variant has been found so far, Brazil becomes the seventh country detecting its presence.

In Brazil, four cases of the hospitalized patients were found with the JN.2.5 variant and 3 despite being discharged after suffering disease severity are recuperating at their homes as the hospitals are overwhelmed….are reported to be having to having all kinds of severe post-COVID conditions. The fourth infected patient died!
This JN.2.5 variant serves as an example to illustrate where in the ongoing COVID-19 crisis, we are going to have so many new variants or sub-lineages of BA.2.86 and more so, JN.1 …that although might not be big in terms of number of sequences or being predominant, will wreak havoc over certain geolocations over a certain period of time before dying out and being replaced by a newer or sub-variant.
We should no longer be just focusing on variants and sub-lineages that are merely huge in terms of number of sequences uploaded on GISAID and deemed to be predominant as the whole kinetics and dynamics of the COVID-19 crisis is changing.
