China announced publicly that more than 1,700 medical workers on the frontlines of China’s battle against
Covid-19 coronavirus have fallen ill from the disease, with almost 90% of those in the epicenter of Hubei.
Of these, six have died including 4 doctors and 2 nurses. In addition, 582 of these medical workers who are infected are currently in critical condition battling for their lives.
The infected and death figures were disclosed by Chinese National Health Commission deputy head Zeng Yixin at a press conference in Beijing on Friday. It’s the first time China has released an official count of the number of infections among medical workers.
Dr Li Wenliang, the hero doctor who sounded an early alarm about the human spread of the new
coronavirus before the information was made public, and was punished by authorities for doing so are among the dead.
Besides demonstrating the impact of the disease on frontline staff, such information is considered important by infectious disease researchers because it provides insights into a disease’s transmissibility and spread.
In a study done on a Wuhan hospital in the initial stages, it was found that hospital transmissions accounted for almost 40 per cent of the
coronavirus infections. The study was published in the Journal Of The American Medical Association.
