A sigmoidoscope is the instrument used to perform a minimally invasive examination of the lower part of the colon. This examination may be conducted as part of routine colon cancer screening, or to diagnose a patient who is experiencing diarrhoea, rectal bleeding, or other gastrointestinal symptoms. Available in two types, the flexible sigmoidoscope is generally preferred over the rigid instrument.
